How I'm spending my final marketing dollars

Hi Reader,

Thanks for reading the previous edition of this newsletter.

Your response to the shift in my positioning blew me away - and reminded me how authenticity builds the best relationships. Thanks for your support by return email and on LinkedIn.

Continuing that theme, this week I'm asking how and where should I spend the small amount of marketing budget I've put aside to grow Embedibble.

Plus:

  • Freelancer? I've got an excellent event for you to check out.
  • Something on the AI front that's blowing my mind and making me sick at the same time.
  • And taglines vs slogans via Vikki Ross via Eddie Shleyner

Let's get into it.

Where would you spend your last marketing dollars?

Pounds. They're actually pounds.

Bill Gates would tell you to spend them on PR.

And I can't deny how powerful PR can be. I honestly believe you can stand on a soap box in your own backyard, call it an event and you'll gain authority.

That sounds pretty cynical, doesn't it?

But even the smallest of stages builds authority. It's powerful.

So should I go all in on PR?

I took an audit of the skills and resources I have at my disposal before I made a decision.

  • Copywriting - that'll be me.
  • Editing - Lucy edits-as-a-service. Anything I write, she edits. BEST upgrade I've brought into my business in ages. We offer this to clients now too - it's been such a success.
  • Marketing support - Cat runs my marketing, doing the do. She's super senior and I'm very fortunate to be partnering with her in this way. She has way better on-the-tools knowledge than I do too so brings action to my thinking (BTW, Cat is also an Embedibble and has capacity from September, if you need someone...)
  • Speaking - have stage? Will talk.
  • Phenomenal marketing people everywhere - friends and acquaintances willing to lend an ear and offer advice.
  • Time - we're not rushed off our feet over here right now so I can get stuck in.

I also did a lot of research. And what I learned was that marketing knowledge, I have.

But sales knowledge? That's something I'm lacking.

So if I spend my last marketing dollars anywhere, it's going to be on SALES!

Never thought I'd write that. But I'm actively seeking advice and experts in this area. Know someone? Please connect us.

(BTW, I really wanted to spend my last dollars on a rebrand but was wisely persuaded not to - yet!)

EVENT

Freelance Business Pricing Forum - June 26th-27th

Freelancer? Come talk to me about MONEY

I'm sharing my go-to framework for pricing projects and joining a panel to talk about freelance pricing problems.

The line-up is great! Elina (host and organiser) has got Jonathan Stark along - The Ditching Hourly Guy.

Lots to be learnt at this one.

Google Notebook

Have you heard about it? So very clever and unsettling in equal measure. Let me know what you make of it.

Taglines vs slogans

Beautifully summarised by Eddie Shleyner (amazing copywriter) and shared by Vikki Ross (another amazing copywriter) on LinkedIn.

That's all for this week, Reader.

Thanks for reading,

Helen

Beg, borrow and steal, Reader, That seems to be the way of it with small business contracts. We live by an unspoken agreement that we'll all borrow each other's terms and hope to god no one actually takes us to court. But not any more folks! I've engaged the help of a brilliant small business solicitor and they've written me the most wonderful contracts. And I don't say that lightly. Because for many years, I used ProCopywriter's Plain English contract. It's hard to beat this contract if...

Networking, Reader. Networking is working. And ain't that always the truth? People buy people. We know this. So first up, here's today's golden nugget: if you're feeling the pinch or wondering how to add impact to your digital campaigns, a little bit of old fashioned hello-ing seems to be working wonders. I'll get into the roots of that and what else I'm doing in a moment. But first: A thought-provoking conversation about AI AI ethics for creatives (a free course) Final call for the best...

Hey Reader, As I continue to show up here authentically and honestly, it's so lovely to let you in on this little bit of good news. We've got a new Embedibble contract! The first since I repositioned the business a month ago. It feels like the concept is beginning to prove itself. I feel like I can do this. And it wasn't a mad move after all. But here's the thing: the source of this new bit of work didn't come from where I thought it would. More on that in a moment. I've also got for you: A...
